Below are the number breakdowns:

STORE DOG FOOD

Estimated calorie needs per medium-size dogs (21-50lbs): 800-1400kcal

Avg. calories per cup of store-bought dog food: 315kcal

Avg. calorie needs by volume: 2.5-4.5 cups per 21-50lb dog

(~1 cup per 10lbs bodyweight per day)

Sample cost of cheapest grocery store dog food:

$0.86/lb @ Walmart ($27.50/32lb. bag)

Amt. per bag: 138 cups (~55 servings @ avg. 2.5 cups per day; ~30 servings @ avg. 4.5 cups per day); 0.23lb/cup = 4.3 cup servings/lb. of dog food; 2.5-4.5 cups per day = btw. 55 to 30.5 days' worth of food per 32lb bag = 50 to 90 cents per day, per 21-50lb. dog

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD

Sample costs of storebrand ingredients:

$12 25.5oz Extra virgin olive oil (120kcal/tbsp, 50 servings)

$21-$24 4-6lbs of 73/27 or 75/25 beef (nutrient breakdown below; 350-440kcal/serving, 15-24 servings, $4-$4.20/lb)

$3.39 40oz canned yams (180kcal/serving, 7 servings)

$3.79-$4 2lb frozen green beans or spinach

$4 ~6 tbsp. ea. turmeric and ginger

Black pepper

Macronutrient + cost breakdown for final batch:

4200cals 3lb beef ($12) + 920cals 40oz yams ($3.39) + 385cals 32oz green beans ($3.79) + 360cals 3.5tbsp EVOO ($.88) + 5 tbsp herbs total (1tbsp/4 servings) ($2) = ~5,925cals @ $22, ~21 (285cal) 2/3 cup servings (14 cups total), $1.05/serving

MORE DIET SCIENCE/DATA (incorporated in video):

Humans need 0.8-1g protein/lb. lean body mass/day, ideal amount from diet is 15-25%

Example: a 35lb dog with healthy-average dog body fat levels (~20%) needs 22-28g protein per day based on this data point

Ancestral diets of dogs had ~14% dietary carbs; with up to 25% of diet being comprised of protein, the remainder (61%) can be filled in with fat calories

Carbohydrates (based on above) should be between 112kcal (28g) to 196kcal (49g) per 21-50lb dog

75/25 beef (cheaper) has 18g protein per 4oz (330kcal), so 25-50lb dogs need 4-8oz/day (330-660kcal) vs. 80/20 beef (leaner) has 20g protein per 4oz (290kcal), so 25-50lb dogs need 3oz-8oz/day (230-580kcal) but must make up for lower calorie content with more food
