"Today, May Day, honors the workers who produce all of the wealth. [It is also "a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on 1 May" (from Wikipedia), but we digress.] It is in honor of those involved in a general strike in Chicago, killed by police in what is known all over the world by workers as the Haymarket massacre.
Ironically, Americans are kept ignorant by a school system and mass media which train them to see from the perspective of the ruling Forces of Greed (FOG). Even most educators, brought up in the propaganda system, don't appear to understand this, explained clearly in Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States.
Many of the most important events in American history and the most important people, people like union hero Big Bill Haywood, have been censored from our history books though their contributions were much greater than many of those mentioned.
Because of the bravery of protesters like those killed in the Haymarket Massacre, workers now have an eight hour day, a weekend, an end to child labor, with the ruling FOG beating them and jailing them all the way, and sometimes murdering them.
Unlike the rest of the world, there is little celebration in the USA, where workers are kept ignorant of their history, lest they discover that they produce all the wealth, even as they go without health care, giving the lion's share to those who inherit from robber barons, corporate executives, and other international investors who live off their sweat."
